Houston Astros Hire Brad Mills as New Manager

ALCS Rays Red Sox Baseball

It’s bittersweet for Terry Francona and the Boston Red Sox – the Houston Astros have hired Brad Mills as their new Manager.

It’s great that Mills gets a chance to coach his own team at the major league level.  At the age of 52, Mills has worked his way to the top job, and he deserves a chance to prove his own worth with his own club.

Selfishly, however, Mills has served the Red Sox admirably since joining Terry Francona’s staff in 2004.  Since that time, Milles has been Francona’s right-hand man, helping lead the Red Sox to 2 World Series Championships in just 6 years.  The Red Sox have made the playoffs in 5 of those 6 seasons and are always considered to be a front-runner for the Fall Classic each and every Spring Training.

As we previously reported, Mills has a long history with Francona – college roommate, teammate, coaching history in Philadelphia.  Mills has also managed at the minor league level – with the Chicago Cubs, Colorado Rockies and Los Angeles Dodgers – and he is clearly ready to manage his own team.

We’ll miss you Brad.  At least you went to a National League team, though.  That way, we’ll only see you in interleague play or in the Fall Classic in October.  Cheers!
