Mike Lowell and Jed Lowrie Making Progress on Injury Front

Mike Lowell and Jed Lowrie are making progress on the injury front – great news as the Red Sox look to keep ahead of the Yankees & Rays in 1st place in the AL East.

Lowell who is still recovering from off-season hip surgery could make a return to the big league club over the weekend in Toronto.

Lowrie had surgery to repair damage to his left wrist in May and the Red Sox will probably activate him from the disabled list on Saturday in Toronto.

Manager Terry Francona is excited about the prospects of having both Lowell and Lowrie back on the active roster: “We certainly have some decisions to make.  And [GM] Theo [Epstein] and I have talked a bunch about this; I don’t think that’s any secret.  ON , to get [Clay] Buchholz [to start Friday's game], and then there could be two that day.  We’re either going to activate Mikey Lowell on Friday or Saturday, and also Lowrie most likely on Saturday… Not having Mike Lowell was tough for us.  We moved [Kevin Youkilis] over to third, and I hope people understand how easy my job is because Youk can do that.”

Francona also went on to say that Lowrie will likely not be back 100%, so he will not play everyday.  Nick Green will continue to see action on the days that Lowrie cannot play and the Red Sox will need to figure out what to do with Julio Lugo.  In any event, it will be great for the Red Sox to get 2 starters back for the 2nd half push.  Let’s just hope they can both stay healthy through the final 2+ months of the 2009 MLB schedule.  Go Sox!
